One of the most important jobs a mother has is feeding her baby. Healthy nutrition is very important for the growth and development of an infant. By breastfeeding, a mother can ensure that the baby is getting the best nutrition possible. The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees that breastfeeding is the best source of nutrition for an infant. In their policy statement, they stated that “breastfeeding ensures the best possible health as well as the best developmental and psychosocial outcomes for the infant.”
Benefits of Breastfeeding
Breast milk provides much more that just nutrition for the baby; it also provides protection. Colostrum is a thin, yellow, milky fluid that is secreted by the breast for the first few days after birth. The colostrum is rich with antibodies, which help the baby fight disease. Babies who are breastfeed and receive these antibodies are less likely to get diarrhea, respiratory illness, ear infections and allergies. Breastfeeding also has many long term benefits. Research shows that babies that are breastfeed are less likely to have type 2 diabetes, Crohn’s disease and cardiovascular disease.
