The Grapefruit Diet has allegedly been around since the 1930s and has also gone by names such as the Hollywood Diet and, incorrectly, as the Mayo Clinic Diet. There doesn't seem to be any clear attribution to the source of the diet. It seems that nobody wanted to take responsibility for it.

The basic premise of the diet is that grapefruit is a mystical fruit that somehow speeds up "fat burning" by eating just one half of a grapefruit prior to every meal.
