The United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report on Monday, September 13 that says 75% of all infants born in that country in 2007 were breastfed. The number of breastfed babies is climbing in America and it is the highest since statistics have been kept.
Seventy-five percent was a target set by something called The Healthy People 2010 initiative; the initiative is an outgrowth of a project began in the U.S. in 1980 and includes many facets of health. Numbers of breastfed babies in the U.S. have fluctuated since the 1950s when stats began to be recorded and been influenced by prevailing cultural thinking. The benefits are considered to be large and governments the world over work to get the message out that breastfeeding gives children the healthiest start possible.
Since Early 70s Breastfeeding Rates Climb
In 1971 the percentage of breastfed babies plummeted to an all-time low when only 25% of American mothers breastfed their babies. In the 80s those numbers climbed back up to sixty-plus per cent but dropped back down to 52% by 1990. The numbers have been going up since.
