Hypothyroidism and Diet
Thyroid problems are common and may hinder weight-loss efforts in affected individuals. There are several different thyroid conditions, but hypothyroidism is most commonly associated with symptoms of weight gain. There is no one specific hypothyroid diet plan that will improve thyroid function or assist with weight loss. However, certain foods and supplements may interfere with prescribed medications and should not be taken together; medications should be taken on an empty stomach unless doing so is contraindicated for the medication. Check with your doctor if you have hypothyroidism and take prescribed medications.
Causes and Symptoms
Hypothyroidism develops when the thyroid gland, located at the base of the neck, is underactive and cannot produce enough thyroid hormone to enable normal bodily functioning. It may develop as the result of an autoimmune disease, too little iodine, medications or be of a congenital nature. An unhealthy lifestyle and increased stress levels may contribute to the disease's effects. Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, constipation, swollen eyes and face, thinning hair and cold intolerance.
